COVID-19 case total increases by more than 500 again in Latvia

Latvia recorded 584 new cases of COVID-19 on December 8, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC), the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic rising to 22,104 on Tuesday.

The highest daily total remains 930 cases recorded December 3.

Of a record 9,764 tests carried out in the previous 24 hours, 6% were positive, roughly the same as the 6.3% figure the previous day.

Unfortunately 16 deaths were also confirmed - the largest daily death toll so far. Two victims were aged 45-55, three victims were aged 55-60, four were aged 65-75, five were aged 75-85 and two victims were aged 85-95.

So far 1,866 patients have recovered from infection and 288 have died.

Meanwhile Latvia's hospitals continue to fill up. The National Health Service (NVD) reported 709 people are currently being treated for symptoms of the coronavirus in Latvia's hospitals, up from 655 the previous day. Of that number 667 have moderate symptoms while 42 have serious symptoms.

The situation in all three Baltic states remains serious. On December 8, Estonia reported 285 new cases of coronavirus and Lithuania reported 1,388 cases and a record 36 deaths.

All arrivals (including returnees) need to fill in an electronic declaration prior to coming to Latvia. It is available at the website covidpass.lv.
