Covid-19 increasingly spreads among youth in Latvia

Covid-19 incidence is increasingly observed among children and teens in Latvia, particularly at schools, according to epidemiologist Jurijs Perevoščikovs' report at a briefing on January 24.

Newswire LETA reported January 23 that last week, from Monday to Friday, 42% of all detected Covid-19 cases were in children and teenagers. 3,908 cases were recorded in children aged up to nine years, whereas 6,795 in 10 to 19-year-olds.

Epidemiologist Jurijs Perevoščikovs also said that, though there has been a growth in all age groups, it is the most rapid among young people.

Jurijs Perevoščikovs said that around 15% of all cases last week were associated with the screening of educational establishments; 9% of all testing pools came back positive, which means that around one in ten forms or groups of pupils are in contact with Covid-19.

The Covid-19 case count, compared to the maximum reached last autumn, is currently almost double that. According to Perevoščikovs, it is plausible that the growth will continue and the number could even double again this week.
