In Latvia, the number of newly recorded cases of Covid-19 has decreased by 6.2% in the past week compared to the previous week, according to information published May 17 by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

Last week, on average 574 new infections per day were found.

The number of tests performed decreased by 1.9% last week, averaging 12,864 tests a day.

At the same time, the number of patients in Covid-19 has increased by 2.2% over the past seven days. On average, 66 patients were hospitalized daily, thus maintaining a stable trend — an average of 660 patients are in hospital each day with Covid-19.

The highest incidence of Covid-19 is currently seen in Pierīga and Latgale.

Covid-19 infectious reproduction factor (R) currently stands at 0.88 (a week earlier at 1.05), indicating a decrease in the spread of infectious disease, SPKC noted.

The center pointed out that there is currently a reduction in Covid-19 morbidity, which is expected to lead to a downward turning of the curve if safety measures are respected and there is a rapid increase in the vaccination pace.
