Covid morbidity at standstill but hospitalizations rise in Latvia

Last week, September 19 to 25, Latvia reported a 1.2% increase in the number of newly identified cases of Covid-19 compared to the previous week, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) said on September 26.

In total, 8,470 new cases of Covid-19 were registered in Latvia over the past week.

The infection reproduction factor (R) 1.06 points to a slower spread of disease in the community compared with the previous week.

The number of patients in hospitals increased by 27%, with an average of 48 people hospitalized daily.

Overall, 435 Covid-19 patients are currently in hospital, including 153 with Covid as a primary diagnosis, and four of them have severe symptoms of the illness.

The number of Covid-19 cases in the age group 0 to 19 declined during the previous week. All other age groups see an increase in the number of newly identified cases.

The largest increase in new cases was found in Zemgale and Latgale.

There is currently a slight increase in the number of newly identified cases of Covid-19 in the European Union.
