In the first four weeks of 2021, i.e. in the period from January 4 to 31, a total of 3,217 deaths were registered in Latvia, while in the first four weeks of 2020, 2,229 deaths were registered in Latvia.
Data released by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) show that 515 people infected with Covid-19 died in the first four weeks of the year. This is 16 percent of all those who died during this period. In the first week of this year the share of Covid-19 related deaths was 20.2 percent, in the second week - 15.8 percent, in the third week - 16.9 percent, and in the fourth week - 10.8 percent.
Among them, 1,700 women died in the first four weeks of this year, which is 43.5 percent more than in the first four weeks last year, and 1,517 men, which is an increase of 45.3 percent.
In the first week of this year 836 deaths were registered in Latvia as opposed to 573 deaths in the first week of 2020, in the second week of this year 815 deaths were registered, while last year in the second week 583 deaths were registered, but 787 deaths were registered in the third week of the year, compared to 526 in the third week of 2020. In the fourth week of this year 779 deaths were registered compared to 547 deaths a year ago.
Of the deaths registered in the first four weeks of this year, 87.8 percent or 2,825 were residents over the age of 60, while last year in the corresponding period year 85.9 percent or 1,915 deaths were over the age of 60.
According to the data, 967 of the deaths were registered in the Riga region, up 47.6 percent from a year ago, followed by Latgale region with 611 deaths, growing 66.5 percent, Pieriga region with 503 deaths, up 31.7 percent, Zemgale region with 429 deaths, up 56 percent, Kurzeme region with 375 deaths, growing 17.9 percent, and Vidzeme region with 325 deaths, up 44.4 percent.
