The Latvian Infectious Diseases Center of Riga Eastern Hospital has reported this season's first tick carrying the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus, the hospital's spokeswoman Aija Lietina told LETA.

Altogether, 72 ticks have been tested in the Infectious Diseases Center's lab this year, 52 of which had been brought to the lab during the past week.

Lietina said that no new cases of tick-borne illnesses were recorded over the past week but that more and more people arrived at the Infectious Diseases Center to test ticks that had bitten them and could carry the infections. Also, medics at the Infectious Diseases Center have removed 23 ticks from patients this year.

No patents of TBE or ehrlichiosis have been treated at the Infectious Diseases Center this year, but six patients have already been treated for Lyme disease.

As reported, the Infectious Diseases Center had inspected 15 ticks by April 15, but none of them was infected with the TBE virus. As many as nine ticks were removed from patients at the Infectious Diseases Center’s emergency room.
