Flu and Covid cases go down in Latvia

In Latvia the previous week, January 23–29, the average intensity of influenza decreased. In general, the prevalence of upper respiratory infections also reduced, according to information from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) on February 1.

In the last week, a total of 1,515 patients visited outpatient treatment facilities in acute cases of upper respiratory tract infections, while a week earlier there were 1,627 patients. A higher incidence of upper respiratory infections has been reported in children aged 0-4 years.

Since the beginning of the flu season in October 2022, 721 cases of influenza have been laboratory confirmed in Latvia and 2,943 clinically confirmed cases have been reported by family doctors. A total of 941 patients with influenza and 172 patients with influenza-induced pneumonia have been reported from the monitoring hospitals.

48 flu-related deaths have been reported so far. 21 of them had not been vaccinated against influenza, 26 patients had no known vaccination status, and one patient had been vaccinated against influenza. In these cases, type A influenza was laboratory-confirmed and occurred mainly in people over 60 years who suffered from a number of adjoining diseases.

The highest prevalence is in Gulbene, Rēzekne, Jūrmala, Jēkabpils, and Rīga.

The average intensity of influenza in Latvia has decreased. 429.4 cases of influenza per 100,000 inhabitants were reported last week and 502.9 were previously reported.

154 Covid-19 cases were laboratory-confirmed in Latvia last week; there were 177 Covid-19 cases a week earlier. Compared to last week, the proportion of SARS-CoV-2 positive samples increased by 0.2%.

61 patients with Covid-19 infections have been reported from the monitoring hospitals. The week before, there were 91 reports.

Eight deaths of Covid-19 patients have been recorded in the past week.
