Flu intensity doubled last week in Latvia

Influenza rates have more than doubled in the past week, according to data from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC), LETA reported December 29.

The intensity of the disease has increased in the past week to 607.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, but in the week before it was 225.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

A total of 231 flu patients have been hospitalized in the previous week. Of these cases, 40 hospitalizations in patients with flu-induced pneumonia have been reported.

Family doctors' practices reported last week 448 clinically confirmed cases of influenza, of which 228 were in Rīga, 64 in Jelgava, 48 in Daugavpils, 21 cases in Jūrmala, 12 in Jēkabpils, five in Valmiera, five in Rēzekne, three in Ventspils and two in Liepāja.

The influenza epidemic started on December 8.
