Former Covid patients will only need one vaccine dose

Latvian government decided July 6 that those who have had and overcome Covid-19 will only need one vaccine dose.

It is expected that if a vaccine is got within 180 days of a laboratory-approved positive Covid-19 test, the Covid-19 certificate on full vaccination will be issued after the first dose. This opportunity will be made available on July 21, when necessary changes are made to the system for establishing and signing the vaccination certificate.

Health Ministry explained that such a decision was taken on the basis of the latest studies on vaccine effectiveness. "For those who have overcome [the infection], this immune response is extremely high after receiving the first dose. And given the second dose, this immune response doesn't grow significantly.

"Of course, if anyone wants, they will certainly be able to receive the second dose, but it just doesn't matter, the second dose. There may be a risk of side effects, but it does no harm. It's just overworking. And this is clearly what these studies show," said infectologist Uga Dumpis at a press conference.
