Food companies have one of the highest risks of COVID-19 spread, and large outbreaks in such companies have happened in many countries, Health Ministry's chief infectologist, Uga Dumpis, told LETA September 25.

This is due to the cold air that facilitates the spread of the virus. Consequently, according to the expert, care should be taken in these establishments to ensure compliance with distancing, the use of personal protective equipment, hand disinfection and timely recognition of disease symptoms and testing.

He added that there is an increased risk to spread infections in all companies where people work in poorly ventilated rooms for extensive periods of time.

“It should also be understood that businesses can be stopped in the event of an epidemic, because many need to be quarantined,” explained Dumpis, adding that companies' employees may have children studying in schools, as a result of which quarantine or self-isolation can create a chain of problems that can start to affect economy as well.

Recently, an outbreak of COVID-19 was detected at the food company Forevers in Rīga, where 19 employees were exposed to infections.
