The situation with COVID-19 in the country is "very, very serious", Health Minister Ilze Viņķele said at a press conference November 26.

Last 24 hours saw the highest-ever number of COVID-19 cases recorded in a single day in Latvia. The number of hospitalized patients is also growing at record speed, and healthcare system is almost at the point where many outpatient services will have to be cancelled.

The Minister recalled that starting November 27, twelve municipalities will have to comply with stricter rules.

"If the situation does not improve,  these stricter rules will have to be imposed in the whole country," said Viņkele.

Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) epidemiologist Jurijs Perevoščikovs said that the range of rules that can still be imposed is not too broad. The main goal is to reduce contacts and gatherings, and to get people to comply with the existing rules.
