Latvia records 794 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday

Latvia recorded 794 new cases of COVID-19 on December 5, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

This is one of the highest number of cases recorded in one day so far. The highest daily total of 930 cases was recorded two days earlier.

With this, the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic has passed the 20 thousand mark, now standing at 20,787.

Of 8,695 tests carried out in the previous 24 hours,  9.1% were positive, up on the 8.5% rate of the previous day. 

Eleven deaths were also confirmed. Three victims were aged 60 to 70, six were aged 85 to 85 and two were older than 85

So far 1,866 patients have recovered from infection and 253 have died.

The situation in all three Baltic states remains serious. On December 5, Estonia reported 561 new cases of coronavirus. Lithuania reported a record 2,848 cases.

On December 5, the 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 of population was 411.0 in Latvia, 1,062.0 in Lithuania and 367.1 in Estonia, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. 

From next week, the ECDC it will no longer issue daily updates, instead moving to "a weekly reporting schedule for the COVID-19 situation (both worldwide and in the EU/EEA and the UK) in December 2020 . All daily updates will be discontinued from 7 December, and from 10 December ECDC will publish updates on the number of cases and deaths reported worldwide and aggregated by week every Thursday."

All arrivals (including returnees) need to fill in an electronic declaration prior to coming to Latvia. It is available at the website covidpass.lv.
