The Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) is ready for rapid and high rates of morbidity. The Head of Service Liene Cipule explained that in recent weeks both the morbidity of the employees and the calls related to Covid-19 have gone down, but in general, the greatest concern is that there may be a lack of staff due to an outbreak of Covid-19.
"Right now, there's a downward curve. There was a rise, but now it is diminished. It is most likely that the greatest challenge will be the illness of employees [..] to ensure continuity of service," said Cipule.
At least for the time being there are no concerns about the increase in morbidity, said Ilze Arāja, representative of the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). However, autumn is the time for children to return to school, and people spend more time in groups. It is therefore still too early to draw conclusions on Covid-19 in the autumn.
Arāja reminded the public that vaccination against both Covid-19 and influenza is particularly important for risk groups, and both vaccines can be administered at once.
Jana Feldmane, director of the Department of Public Health of the Ministry of Health (VM), said that the country is prepared for various Covid-19 scenarios and that various possible restrictions are directly related to how high morbidity and hospital load will be.
“It is basically intended to be the use of masks, the use of more extensive Covid-19 tests, remote work, and personal responsibility,” the VM spokeswoman said.
The Covid-19 Omicron type continues to circulate and experience shows that it rarely causes severe health problems, and therefore the most likely scenario is that Covid-19 will be treated like a seasonal infection.
