Lockdown now could mean wave in spring: epidemiologist

Take note – story published 2 years ago

If a lockdown were introduced now, it could lead to a new wave of Covid-19 in March, so it is important now to find a balance in restrictions, epidemiologist Ņikita Trojanskis told Latvian Television January 26.

The epidemiologist believes it is important at the moment to consider the proportionality of the restrictions, rather than to limit the contact between households, which could later mean rapid hospitalization of Covid-19 patients meeting after a long time. Trojanskis also emphasized the importance of the booster vaccine in the future fight against Covid-19.

Family doctor Ainis Dzalbs agreed, stating that very strict limits would not be effective at the moment. In his opinion, the safety measures should be such that all people do not get ill at the same time but rather that “the increase in morbidity is calmer”.

Similarly, according to Dzalbs, the recent rapid increase in the number of new infections of Covid-19 has brought more demand for assistance than family doctors can offer, and doctors are therefore seeking to give priority to those who need it most.
