More Latvian medical staff get ill with Covid-19

Last week, the number of medicine employees infected with Covid-19 rose, Health Minister Daniels Pavļuts said at the government meeting January 18.

Currently, 366 employees are absent. On January 17, they were 321 employees and 252 the week before.

The Minister pointed out that in a situation where medical personnel is lacking, each illness is a blow to the healthcare system.

Pavļuts described the situation with Covid-19 in hospitals as stagnating. He also said that there is an increase in the number of patients for whom the primary reason for hospitalization is not Covid-19. This could be due to disturbances of scheduled healthcare in the autumn, as well as to the aggravation of other diseases exacerbated by the Omicron.

The number of calls at the emergency services (NMPD) increased by 13%. On average, 1,820 calls are received daily. In comparison, in December, on average, 1,615 calls were received daily.
