Number of Covid patients in Latvia's hospitals exceeds 1,500

Take note – story published 2 years ago

A total of exactly 1,800 new cases of Covid-19 infection were recorded in Latvia October 31, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

Of that number, 1,328 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 472 were fully vaccinated. The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 219,139.

Of 16,967 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 10.6% were positive. However, the 14-day cumulative morbidity rate reduced slightly from Saturday's record level of 1,801.2 cases per 100,000 of population to 1,770.7 Sunday.

Sadly, 16 more Covid-related deaths were also confirmed. All but two of the victims were aged 60 or above. Of the fatalities, 12 were unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated and 4 were fully vaccinated. The death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 3,253.

The level of hospitalizations continues to be a key indicator as hospitals are stretched to full capacity and beyond. Sunday's data show more than 1,500 people are currently being treated in Latvia's hospitals for Covid infection for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Of 1,526 patients, 191 have serious symptoms.
