Number of imported Covid-19 cases increased in Latvia last week

Last week the number of new Covid-19 cases in Latvia increased by 34.3% and the number of imported cases grew significantly, according to information published by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) August 16.

From August 9 to 15, an average of 7,900 tests (the week before 7,451) were conducted daily and an average of 100 new cases were detected per day (75 before). In the last seven days, an average of 7 Covid-19 patients per day (previously also 7) were hospitalized and an average of 62 people were treated in hospitals (previously 50).

In the last two weeks, from August 2 to 15, increases in morbidity have been observed in all age groups, particularly among people aged between 30 and 49 years. The incidence has also increased in children aged 0 to 9 years and between 10 and 19 years.

Compared to the previous week, last week the incidence of Covid-19 increased in all regions except Kurzeme. The reproduction rate of Covid-19 infection (R) rose to 1.23.

 579 or 83% of all people infected last week had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or the vaccination course had not yet been completed, while 122 people, or 17%, had been vaccinated. Thus, Covid-19 infection was reported 2.6 times more frequently in unvaccinated people. 

In the previous week, the number of imported cases of Covid-19 increased significantly from 75 to 112. Between 5 July and 15 August this year, the most infected people came from Turkey (71 cases), Russia (50), Spain (43), Britain (42), Georgia (24), Uzbekistan (17), the Netherlands (16), Finland (16), Belarus (15), France (14) and Ireland (14).
