Omicron patients also get hospitalized, says head of emergency team of Latvia

Although there are indications that the Covid-19 Omicron variant is less dangerous than the Delta, people with the Omicron are also brought into intensive care, Liene Cipule, head of Emergency Medical Service (NMPD), told Latvian Radio January 10.

She said that it is difficult to assess the impact of the Omicron since relatively little time has passed since the variant emerged. At the same time, saying it is lighter than the Delta variant isn't right, Cipule said.

Currently, there are no difficulties in assembling emergency teams, but Cipule said at some point the overall morbidity could affect work. She focused on the high safety measures in the service, such as the constant wearing of respirators and testing before each shift, so if the employees were infected, she thought it would be more likely to happen outside work.

The head of NMPD said that the Omicron complicates the work of the reception departments in the development of patient logistics because often a person is in hospital for other reasons but is revealed to have symptomless Covid-19.

Cipule stressed the importance of being cautious at the moment and not loosening restrictions so that hospitals do not get overloaded.
