The number of people infected with Covid-19 continues to decrease slowly in Latvia – compared to the previous week, the incidence decreased by 11.2% and an average of 592 new infections per day has been detected. Latvia's 14-day cumulative rate per 100,000 inhabitants is 461.9.
Maintaining the existing safety measures, an improvement in the epidemiological situation and an incidence rate of fewer than 200 people per 100,000 inhabitants per day could be expected in May, SPKC indicated.
Over the last seven days, Latvia has achieved the highest number of tests carried out so far – a total of 81 179 tests have been carried out. The average positive test rate is 5.1% (seven days ago, a total of 70,477 tests, a positive test rate of 6.6%). The number of tests performed has increased by 15.2% over the week, with an average of 11,542 tests per day (10,068 tests per day seven days ago).
A total of 4,145 new infections with Covid-19 were recorded last week, compared with 4,667 new cases seven days ago. The reduction was observed in all regions of Latvia (including Rīga) and in all age groups except children. There is still an increase in the incidence of children aged between 0 and 14 years. The highest incidence is observed among young people aged 10-19 years.
The incidence continues to rise in neighboring Estonia, with a 14-day cumulative rate of 1309.1. Estonia has the second highest incidence rate among the countries of the European Union (EU).
The coefficient of reproduction of Covid-19 infection calculated by epidemiologists (R) in Latvia is currently 0.91 (0.97 a week ago). This means that 91 other people are infected by 100 already sick.
However, according to the SPKC, the epidemiological situation in Latvia is very volatile and fragile. The SPKC recalls that every resident of Latvia must consider working remotely, staying at home with even minor symptoms of illness, correctly using a face mask when visiting public places, observing a safe physical distance from others in public places.
