Vaccination pace continues to fall in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Vaccination rates against Covid-19 continued to decline significantly in Latvia last week, according to data compiled by the National Health Service (NVD), LETA said July 19.

Between July 12 and July 18, a total of 32,020 people received a Covid-19 shot, one of the lowest figures since March this year. During the summer period, this figure was lower only in the week in which Midsummer was celebrated, with 31,489 jabs.

33.84% of the population have completed the vaccination process in Latvia. The data may still change as vaccination authorities enter data in the system, but the slowing of the vaccination rate makes it look increasingly likely that hopes to have most people vaccinated by summer's end may be missed.

A significant drop in vaccination pace has been ongoing since the beginning of summer. So far, the highest vaccination pace was in the week of May 24, when around 16,600 people were vaccinated on average daily.

Over the past week, 12,606 people received their first shot against Covid-19, and 8,397 people got the second. Another 11,017 people received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine requiring only one dose. As a result, only 4,575 people were vaccinated on average daily.

The head of vaccination project department, Eva Juhņēviča, said that the drop is concerning and that there are many locations readily available to those who might have hesitated to get the jab due to accessibility issues.

"We're getting closer to the everyday life of people. We provide vaccination points at malls, fairs, town festivals. And today, as a special activity, I want to highlight – there is a vaccination point by the University of Latvia, which is intended for new students who are going to sort out their documents, that they can also take advantage of the possibility of getting vaccinated. We forecast that in August, as autumn approaches, the pace and interest could rise, but clearly it is a frightening thing that currently rates have fallen."
