Week begins with 1,000 more Covid-19 cases in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

According to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) on Monday, October 11, Latvia recorded 1,002 daily cases of Covid-19 infection.

Of the positive cases, 834 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 168 were fully vaccinated. The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 172,278.

Of 7,847 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 12.8% were positive. Monday's new case total is usually the lowest of the week due to a smaller number of tests being carried out on Sundays, so the prospects for the rest of the week are worrying.

The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants continued to increase from 871.0 Sunday to 908.6 Monday, which is the highest figure since the start of the pandemic.

Sadly, there was also confirmation of five more Covid-related deaths. All of the deceased were aged over 60 years. The death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 2,806.

With the infection wave continuing to strengthen, the level of hospitalizations continues to be a focus of attention as hospitals come under intense pressure. According to the latest available figures there are 718 people being treated for Covid-19 symptoms in Latvian hospitals, of which number 84 are displaying serious symptoms.

The epidemiological situation in all three Baltic states continues to be among the worst in Europe. In Estonia 727 cases were recorded and Lithuania recorded more than 1,000 cases during the last 24 hours.
