Weekly Covid case count rose by 49% in Latvia

Last week, from September 12 to 18, Latvia's number of new cases of Covid-19 increased by 48.8% compared to the previous week, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) reported on Monday.

8,368 new Covid-19 cases were reported during the week. The infection reproduction factor (R) at 1.31 points to the increased spreading of Covid.

The number of patients in hospitals increased by 23%.

The number of Covid-19 cases in the age group 10 to 19 increased 1.5 times during the previous week. More frequent cases were reported in Vidzeme and Latgale.

There is also an increase in the number of newly identified cases of Covid-19 in the European Union.

The SPKC noted that, like every autumn, the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections will increase in the coming weeks. It is therefore essential for parents to be responsible and not let the child go to school or kindergarten if there are symptoms of illness. 

Custom vaccines for Omicron subtype are available at family doctor practices and vaccination offices.
