Three drowned, five died in fires over weekend in Latvia

Five people have lost their lives in fires and three people have died in water bodies in the last three days, according to the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) on September 9.

Between September 6 and September 9 morning, the State Fire Service received 187 calls - 68 for fire-fighting, including three for forest fires, 61 for rescue work, and 58 were not emergencies.

On Saturday, a deceased person was found in a pond in Nīkrāce parish, Kuldīga municipality, and handed over to the State Police, while on Sunday, two deceased persons were rescued from water bodies in Latgale - in Kaunata parish, Rezekne municipality, and in Zvirgzdene parish, Ludza municipality.

At 05:22 on Sunday firefighters went to Limbaži municipality, where a wood shed of 2 m2, firewood of 3 m2, and a bonfire of 1 m2 were on fire. Before the arrival of the firefighters, a man had fled from the burning shed but had already died when the firefighters arrived.

Sunday at 17:01 VUGD received a call to Ventspils municipality, where a two-storey dwelling house with an area of 250 m2 was on fire. A person died in the fire. At 21:58 the fire was eliminated.

At 18:06 fire rescuers received a call to Riga, where an apartment of 40 m2 was on fire on the ground floor of a one-storey residential house. Searching the apartment, firefighters found a deceased person. Three people were evacuated from the building before the arrival of the VUGD. At 20:52 the fire was extinguished.
