Police remind public to be alert after child found wandering streets alone

On Friday, July 5, the State Police (VP) received information about a girl of about five years of age who was walking alone in the street in Liepāja. As it later turned out, the girl had left her home in Cimdenieki early in the morning and traveled to Liepāja by bus. The mother did not report her daughter's disappearance.

On Friday, July 5, at around 11:15, the VP received information that a passer-by had noticed a girl, aged about five, walking alone in Liepāja, Lielā Street. State Police officers arrived at the scene and started to clarify what had happened.

The law enforcement officers arrived at the residence of the girl's mother and found out that while she was sleeping, at around 5:30 in the morning, the child had taken the house keys and left the residence in Cimdenieki, South Kurzeme Region.

At around 8:00, the woman realized that her daughter was not at home and started looking for the child in Cimdenieki, but did not think it necessary to report the matter to the police.

The girl spent more than 5 hours away from home before being found by a passer-by in Liepāja, about 7 kilometers from her home. The girl was wearing a T-shirt, shorts, and a winter hat. It was found out that the girl came to Liepāja by public transport - bus.

The State Police has initiated administrative offense proceedings against the girl's mother for failure to fulfill childcare obligations. This offense is punishable by a warning or a fine of up to EUR 210. 

The law enforcement officers expressed their gratitude to the responsive resident who was not indifferent to the situation and immediately reported the incident to the police. The police also urged the citizens not to be indifferent and to report such and similar cases in the future.
