Tele2 launches scam caller blocking system in Latvia

Tele2 has introduced a security system that automatically blocks fake mobile phone calls from abroad. In the first few days, about 100 fake calls per hour were blocked, the company said in a press release on November 12.

The Finance Latvia Association has previously pointed out that on average almost €1 million is being scammed from the Latvian population by telephone per month this year.

Tele2's solution will help in the fight against fraudsters who fake Latvian numbers and try to extract sensitive information or money from mobile users.

The automated system for blocking fake mobile phone numbers is available free of charge to all Tele2 and Zelta Zivtiņa customers.

"If we find that the caller's number belongs to Tele2, but the real subscriber is physically unable to make such a call from abroad, the call will be blocked," explained Valdis Vancovičs, Chairman of the Board of Tele2.

Scammers pose as representatives of banks, delivery services, multinational companies, government institutions, or other organizations. They usually impersonate companies on whose behalf they could obtain bank login details or other sensitive information. From now on, suspicious calls made from abroad with fake Latvian numbers will be blocked on the Tele2 network, thus significantly reducing the possibility of them reaching users.
