Four teenagers die in car crash in Latvia

On the night of Thursday, September 19, four young people were killed in a crash in Lizums parish, Gulbene municipality, State Police said.

The accident happened at half past midnight on the Cesvaine-Velēna road.

Preliminary information shows that the driver of the Audi lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. 

The driver, born in 2007, and three passengers, a girl born in 2006, a girl born in 2010 and a boy born in 2007, were killed. Another passenger, born in 2007, was taken to a medical facility.

The driver had no driver's license as he was underage. The car had undergone maintenance checks.

Firefighters had to use hydraulic tools to free two victims from the crashed car. 

Acting Head of the Vidzeme Regional Directorate of the State Police Dimitrijs Kohanovs told Latvian Radio that according to the Road Traffic Safety Directorate, the car belongs to the driver's brother, a young man born in 2005.

Kohanovs told Latvian Radio more about the scene of the accident:

"According to the information available to me at the moment, the road section was relatively straight with a small bend where the vehicle left the carriageway. Of course, it was dark at night and visibility was also hampered by thick fog." Kohanovs could neither deny nor confirm at this time whether the driver was under the influence of any intoxicating substance.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

In total, 116 road traffic accidents were registered with the State Police over the past 24 hours. 14 persons were injured and 4 killed.
