A wide variety of special events are slated for 2016 to honor one of the pioneers of Latvian art - painter Janis Rozentals, whose 150th anniversary is celebrated this year, reported LETA newswire Friday.

As Rozentals was born in March, it will be the month with the most events, featuring exhibitions, conferences, lectures, book presentations, and contests. The Latvian Postal Service and the Bank of Latvia will issue a jubilee stamp and coin.

Minister of Culture Dace Melbarde pointed out that Latvia will again spend the year devoted to a seminal personality - 2015 was the year for two literary giants - Janis Rainis and Aspazija. "I am pleased to report that Rozentals' anniversary is included in the prestigious UNESCO Calendar - the first visual artist to earn this honor ever.

The minister also expressed pleasure about the grand re-opening of the Latvian National Museum of Art (LNMA) in Riga on May 4 that will coincide with the Rozentals-150 celebration.

LNMA Director Mara Lace added her praise for the master painter, saying that his works are at the forefront of the burgeoning national art movement.

Lace informed that many interesting events are planned in the first half of the year in the Kurzeme city of Saldus, where Rozentals was born.
