Zolitūde tragedy memorial site still under construction

The site where the roof of the Maxima supermarket collapsed 11 years ago on November 21 is still a fenced-off area - the long-awaited memorial site has not been built. All remaining structures were dismantled last year, but construction work is still ongoing. At present, there is only an empty plaza, Latvian Radio reports.

Last year, a construction project for the Zolitūde Garden of Remembrance was drawn up, and a year ago the Riga City Council also indicated that construction work could start during this year's construction season, with the opening of the memorial planned for next spring. This summer, the municipality launched a tender, with four applicants, but the tender was suspended because the regulations needed to be clarified. The tender will be reopened soon.

The estimated cost of the park is between EUR 1.5 and 2 million. The new planned deadline could be the beginning of 2026, according to the Riga City Council. Although there is still no permanent memorial, people sometimes stop by the temporary memorial on November 21 and remember the 54 dead with candles and flowers.

Those living in the area remember the tragic events of that day very vividly, so residents are particularly looking forward to the redevelopment of the area and are disappointed that it has taken so long.

On November 21 , the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, also visited the site of the tragedy and laid flowers in honor of the victims.
