Birth figures in Latvia continue downward trend

In the first five months of this year, 5,309 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 10.9% or 648 newborns fewer than in the corresponding period of 2023, according to preliminary data from Central Statistical Bureau published by LETA on July 22.

In the first five months of 2024, 2,728 of the registered newborns were boys, which is 10.9% or 333 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2023, and 2,581 were girls, which is a decrease of 10.9% or 315.

In May, 1,094 births were registered in Latvia, which is 11.8% or 146 fewer than in the corresponding month of 2023, including 566 boys and 528 girls.

In the first five months of this year, 11,530 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 6.4% or 782 fewer than in the first five months of 2023, when 12,312 deaths were registered.

Thus, in the first five months of this year, the number of deaths registered exceeded the number of births by 6221, while in the same period of the previous year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 6355.

In the first five months of 2024, 2,389 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 15.8% or 449 fewer marriages than in the corresponding period of 2023.

On June 1 this year, the estimated population of Latvia was 1.862 million.
