The wheelchair is equipped with three float-type wheels and its armrests are shaped like life buoys, which ensure the wheelchair's buoyancy. One wheelchair has a load capacity of 115 kilograms and life jackets are provided for added safety.
Beach floating wheelchairs are available free of charge and can be picked up at the Apšuciems School by prior arrangement by calling +371 26132761.
Aija Neilande, project manager of the Kurzeme Planning Region, said that other improvements are also planned.
"We have also planned solutions for people with visual impairments, such as audio guides and the adaptation of the baltictrails.eu website. These measures will help to ensure that our beautiful nature is accessible to all," said Neilande.
The project aims to improve the accessibility of the Baltic hiking trails Jūrtaka and Mežtaka for different social groups by introducing accessibility and inclusive marketing solutions in both trails in Latvia and Estonia. The project is implemented with the support of the Estonia-Latvia Cross-border Programme from July 1 2023 to June 30 2026.
