Over 9,000 insurance claims filed after July storm in Latvia

By Thursday, August 22, insurers had received 9,097 applications for compensation for damage caused by the July storm, the Latvian Association of Insurers (LAA) said.

The total amount of claims is more than EUR 20 million. So far, EUR 7 million has been paid out, representing around 40% of all claims.

The LAA expects that the number of claims submitted to insurers for damage caused by the July storm will not increase significantly, but the amount will increase further as the extent of the damage becomes clearer and repair work continues.

On the night of July 29, Latvia was hit by the most intense rainfall in recorded history and the strongest summer storm. Rīga, Jūrmala, the Rīga vicinity, and some districts in Zemgale were hardest hit. At the peak of the storm, the number of customers without power supply reached almost 50,000.
