Shop assistant suspended over anti-Latvian statements

An employee of a "Postcard" store has been suspended from her job after making hostile remarks against Latvians and refusing to serve customers in Latvian, the store's representatives told LETA on October 24.

She has been suspended until the State Language Centre (VVC) assesses her language skills.

"We categorically disagree with the employee's statements and condemn her actions. Customer service should always be conducted in the national language and personal disagreements should be resolved after working hours, outside commercial premises," the Postcard representatives said.

The store also said that the employee had been working for a few days and that the incident occurred during the probationary period.

In the future, the internal rules will be updated and more thoroughly checked to improve the quality of service, the representatives promise.

On the evening of October 18 , information about a case of a saleswoman at the "Postcard" store in the "Mols" shopping center who refused to serve customers in Latvian and made hateful remarks about the Latvian nation was widely circulated on social networking sites.

In response to this information, the State Security Service (VDD) held preventive talks with the shop assistant on October 19, warning her that actions aimed at inciting national hatred or hatred could lead to criminal liability.

The VDD officials also held discussions with the management of both the shop and the shopping center.
