Campaign against online scam launched in Latvia

Reports of internet fraud are on the rise. Four years ago, 131 reports of financial fraud were received, but this year the number has already exceeded 400, according to the internet safety platform "drossinternets.lv", Latvian Television reported November 25.

The Consumer Rights Protection Centre (PTAC) has launched the "Don't believe in miracles on the internet!" (with an @ added to "Internet" instead of an "a" in true 2000s fashion) campaign on Monday, November 25. The campaign aims to inform and educate people about safe online shopping.

A survey conducted by Luminor Bank also shows that almost half or 45% of small and medium-sized enterprises in Latvia have been attacked by fraudsters in the last year. The number of fraud cases has not increased significantly, but those who have been granted access to company accounts are particularly at risk of fraud. This is also demonstrated by a number of cases that have come to light. For example, earlier this year, a woman from Kuldiga contacted the State Police because she had been defrauded of €160,000 - most of it company money.

This year Cert.lv has launched a DNA firewall app that is available for various mobile devices and free of charge. Downloading it will give you more protection against fraudsters. It can also be installed on a computer, router or other device.

The PTAC campaign will run until Christmas and will include outdoor advertising, podcasts and other material to encourage consumers to be more vigilant when shopping online.
