Midsummer's Day will be remembered for a long time by one team of the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD) - a family was unable to reach the hospital by themselves and a baby boy was born in the service's car.
Compared to other years, there have been fewer Midsummer-related injuries. However, the number of calls rose by one third compared to every day.
Ilona Indriksone, Deputy Head of the NMPD Brigade Support Control Centre, said: "There were some burns. These injuries were caused by jumping over a bonfire or lighting a bonfire using kindling or petrol. Yesterday a man was very badly burnt."
Most of the injuries were sustained while under the influence of alcohol, the NMPD spokeswoman said.
Ilze Dāme, spokeswoman for the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD), said that the holidays had been busy for the service, with more than 200 calls received and seven people injured in fires. Last year, the service received more than 300 calls.
"This year, unlike other years, we did not receive any calls related to recreation and celebrations by the water. There was no need to rescue people from overturned boats or to recover the dead from bodies of water. Is this because people have become more aware? Or was it perhaps the chilly evening? We don't know," said Dāme.
Every year, firefighters receive up to 30 misleading calls. This year is no exception, with 20 such calls.
From June 21 to 25 , the State Police checked almost 24,500 drivers. A total of 36 drivers were caught under the influence of alcohol and two under the influence of drugs. The number of drivers caught driving under the influence has decreased compared to last year.
Juris Jančevskis, Head of the State Police Response Department, said: "This year the celebrations were perhaps a little disturbed by the weather, with rain in many regions of Latvia. That is why the numbers are a bit lower than last year. But we still see that a good number of drivers combine celebrating and driving. Unfortunately, this attitude and responsibility towards road safety on their part is also quite low."
On Midsummer, there were 147 traffic accidents, in which 23 people were injured and two died. Police are still investigating the circumstances.
