€30 million needed for Ukrainian refugee housing

Some €30 million would be needed to provide new Ukrainian refugee accommodation, according to information submitted by the Ministry of Interior to the government, LETA reported on April 18.

Around 6500 persons could be housed in the available buildings. Ten municipalities had not yet provided information before the Government meeting on April 12.

Local governments have provided information that the premises could be repaired or adapted within one month to 1.5 years. For example, the Ventspils municipality service hotel can be prepared for 60 persons within approximately 30 working days, while Valmiera municipality can prepare for 66 persons by October 2023.

For accommodation, 741 apartments, 11 service hotels, four dorms, 14 schools, two boarding schools, six municipal-owned residential houses are offered. A rehabilitation center, sanatorium, tuberculosis hospital, Ozolmuiža Palace could also be used.

In Riga, for example, approximately 1,100 people could be housed, needing €13.4 million.
