Kristaps Kolbergs, Chief of the Operational Control Department of the State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed to Latvian Television that by Monday evening, rescuers had received a record number of calls related to wind and rain.
The highest number of calls - more than 500 - came from residents of Rīga, while wind damage in Jūrmala and the Rīga region has been reported almost 500 times. In Zemgale, nearly 200 reports have been received.
Firefighters continue to go from one call to another, clearing road carriageways, pavements, buildings, and cars of fallen trees. Very often, on their way to the scene, firefighters are forced to stop to clear the carriageway of a tree that has not yet been reported.
One firefighter was also injured during the rescue on Monday.
