Since the declaration of the state of emergency in Latvia, the State Police have carried out 45,545 preventive inspections and opened 718 administrative cases, said Girgens.
A total of 550 individuals have been fined for flouting the restrictions, and the average amount of the fine is close to EUR 54.
As reported, most of the violations deal with restrictions on assembly, including people failing to stay two meters apart.
The Code of Administrative Violations provides for a fine of 10 to 2,000 euros for natural persons and 140 to 5,000 euros for legal persons for violation of restrictions or prohibitions established during an emergency or exceptional situation.
As previously explained by the police, the commencement of administrative proceedings does not automatically mean that a person will be sentenced. The police first find out the circumstances and only then make a decision.
During the Easter holidays, the police fined a Covid-19 patient EUR 2,000 for flouting quarantine on two separate occasions, which means that the man now has to pay EUR 4,000.
