Air Police identify another Russian plane

Take note – story published 9 years ago

Baltic Air Police (BAP) jet pilots from the NATO alliance flew up to international airspace near Latvian territory over the Baltic Sea Tuesday and identified another Russian air force transport plane Ilyushin IL-76 Tuesday afternoon, the National Armed Forces (NBS) reported in its Twitter feed.

So far this year the NBS has reported already 30 incidents altogether where Russian military units, whether ships or planes, have strayed close enough to Latvian territorial waters and airspace to warrant their identification and observation.

The Russian air force planes in particular rarely, if ever, use their transponders in flight, causing concern among military and civil aviation authorities alike about the hazard to passenger planes unaware of their presence.
