Air police scramble twice for Russian planes

Take note – story published 8 years ago

NATO's Baltic Air Police (BAP) reported two separate scramblings to identify Russian aircraft in the skies over the Baltic Sea Monday.

On Monday afternoon the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) reported on its social media that an SU-27 Suvorov fighter jet known in NATO code as a Flanker was identified by Air Policing jets close to Latvian airspace.

Earlier the same day the NBS tweeted that the BAP had spotted two planes - an Ilyushin IL-20 plane and an Antonov AN-26 military transport craft.

The sightings come as NATO began conducting wide-ranging military drills in the Baltic region as well as on other geopolitical flanks of the alliance.
