Another day, another NATO intercept

Take note – story published 9 years ago

NATO's Baltic Air Policing (BAP) contingent of F-16 fighters scrambled Thursday to intercept and identify yet another Russian military plane flying through Baltic airspace without bothering to log a flight plan or transmit its identifying data.

Not for the first time, the culprit turned out to be a veteran Ilyushin-20 used for intelligence gathering and a a command post.

Scrambles have become a regular occurence as Russian military planes repeatedly test NATO's capabilities by flying in the busy Baltic skies with scant regard for the safety of other aircraft in the area.
