'Christmas express' to deliver gifts from Latvia to Ukraine's orphanages

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Nearly 500 young Ukrainians will receive gifts from people in Latvia who have responded to the invitation of the Society Tavi draugi (“Your Friends”) and have filled the “Christmas Express” with gifts for children in Ukraine's orphanages, Latvian Television reported on December 19.

The Christmas market at Doma Square is the last stop of the “Christmas Express” before heading to Ukrainian orphanages. There are still gifts for 36 children, and then 500 dreams will be filled. The author of the idea, Kaspars Bērziņš, will purchase a gift for Ilya, who lost his mother to war.

Kaspars' daughter Līna Grieta Bērziņa said: “We'll buy Ilya a Lego constructor, a plane. Because he wants to learn to build himself.” Kaspars Bērziņš added: “He also says that airplanes fly above, my mother has died, and everything I want is peace. But I want to grow big and build planes. So I ask for the constructor.”

But Margarita Misharina, a Ukrainian girl in Latvia, has already got her gift – a guitar. The girl has been taking shelter in Latvia since the spring, but her friends have stayed in Ukraine. “It is hard, cold. The gifts will warm them. I'm 12 years old, I live in Zolitūde, I like to play the piano, and I like winter.”

The activity at the Christmas Express was not dwindling, the gift providers kept coming. After collecting the gifts, the express will leave for Ukraine.
