Clear differences in regional vaccination take-up across Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

The Central Statistical Bureau has compiled the latest information on where people live who have already received Covid-19 vaccinations.

According to these data, only 54% of seniors in Latvia have been vaccinated against Covid-19. Residents of Vidzeme region and Pieriga (the region immediately surrounding the capital) have the highest uptake of vaccines.

In Vidzeme, 63% of the population of this age group has been vaccinated. Pierīga has the second highest indicator - 60%, followed by Kurzeme (56%) and Zemgale (55%) but the very low vaccination rate in Latgale (39%) drags down the national average.

However it should be noted that the data refer to the projected situation on 1 November, i.e. the statistics include all those who had received a second dose of the vaccine by 18 October, so will be counted as having completed a vaccination course by the start of November. The numbers therefore do not include wat appears to be a notable increase in vaccination rates around the start of the 'lockdown' period on October 21.

According to these data, a total of 48% of the population in Latvia has been vaccinated. The highest rates are in Rūjiena, Rucava, Carnikava and Valmiera. Again, it should be noted this is the total population and includes minors under the age of 12 (the minimum age from which vaccination is currently possible).

In Riga and Jūrmala, about half of the population has been vaccinated, but in other cities fewer people have been vaccinated.

Vaccination coverage is still very low in Latgale region. In Riebiņi it is 28%, in Rēzekne municipality 29% and in Cibla and Dagda, about 30% of the population have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

But the age group of particular concern to doctors are seniors over the age of 60. This is because at the beginning of this week, the majority of Covid-19 patients in hospital were seniors - 66% of moderately ill patients and 60% of severely ill patients were over 60 years of age.

Currently, only a little more than half (54%) of all seniors in Latvia have been vaccinated against Covid-19. The situation is similar throughout Latvia with even the high takeup centers in Vidzeme only slightly better than the rest of the country.

In parts of Latgale only a third of seniors over the age of 60 have received vaccinations against Covid-19.

In Kurzeme region, the vaccination coverage for seniors is on average about 50%, with Kuldīga leading the way with 55% of seniors vaccinated.
