Coronavirus takes its toll on marriage statistics

Data released by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) July 20 show that in the first six months of this year 3,579 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 1,151 marriages or 24 % less than in the first half of 2019.

"The drop in the number of marriages registered was affected by the implementation of an emergency situation in Latvia as of 13 March due to the COVID-19 pandemic," the CSB said.

In March, April and May of this year the number of marriages fell, but in June, as compared to May, their number rose – 888 marriages were registered – 423 marriages more than in May, but 511 marriages fewer than in June last year. In the second quarter of 2020, 1,835 marriages were registered in total – 1,141 marriages or 38 % less than in the respective period of 2019.

In the first half of this year, 8,900 live births were registered, and that is the same number as in the first six months of 2019. 14,100 deaths were registered in the first half year, which is almost 300 deaths fewer than in January–June last year.

In June 2020, the number of registered births (1,525) was 5.6 % more than in the respective month of the previous year. Number of deaths in June comprised 2,378, meaning that in June of this year there were 786 deaths more than births.

On 1 July 2020, the provisional population of Latvia was 1,901,000.
