The prosecutor of Riga City Vidzeme District this week decided to press charges against seven medical employees of Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (Gailezers) accused of corruption.

Kristine Sutugina, a spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General's Office, told LETA that one suspect has been charged with criminal omission, four have been charged with soliciting and accepting bribes, and two persons have been charged with organizing graft.

The prosecutor's office of Riga City Vidzeme District has declined to provide more detailed comments.

As reported, the Corruption Prevention Bureau in May requested that charges be brought against seven medics from the Riga East Clinical University Hospital for accepting bribes from patients.

The Corruption Prevention Bureau launched in 2015 a criminal case against staff at the Latvian Oncology Center and Gailezers' Radiology Department of Riga East Clinical University Hospital, based on evidence that points to illegally requested (or implied) and accepted fees for services (under the counter).

The Bureau's press secretary, Laura Dusa, told LETA that the evidence specifically indicates a number of staff members abused their authority in requesting and accepting favors from patients so that the standard queue for an MRI does not pertain to them.

These corruption activities are believed to have taken place for a sustained period of time - from October 2013 to April 2015.

The CPB has requested that charges be brought against seven persons.
