This is the first sentence that confirms that vote buying took place in the 12th Saeima elections.
According to election law, after a sentence has been cast in a vote buying case the CVK has to evaluate whether the votes have affected the mandates in the particular election. It will have to decide whether to divide the mandates on the candidates registered in the election.
In early October the court sentenced Jevgenis Brovcenko in one of the numerous vote buying cases that were started after information surfaced about vote buying in Eastern Latvia for Unity candidate Dzintars Zakis. He was sentenced to 100 hours community service.
Brovcenko admitted that on the election day he promised €10 each to three people if they voted for the Unity late and marked Dzintars Zakis as the preferred candidate.
The Rezekne court is reviewing another case about possible vote buying for Zakis. The case will be continued on November 27.
A total of seven criminal proceedings about vote buying were started after the 12th Saeima Election, and a several of them have been sent to court.
