Culture Minister made head of integration fund

On August 30, the council of the Social Integration Fund elected Culture Minister Nauris Puntulis as the head of the fund's council.

This was the second vote on the matter, with Puntulis as the only candidate. He was supported by nine votes 'for' and one abstaining.

The previous vote took place two weeks ago where Puntulis (National Alliance) competed with Inese Siliņa, a head of an NGO center in western Latvia. But the vote was inconclusive.

Puntulis said the Social Integration Fund has to develop its strategy, ensure transparency and implement online solutions. He likewise stressed that the entire council is to partake in decision-making at the fund.

The Social Integration Fund is an organization that helps coordinate and support projects pertinent to social integration, for example, by offering Latvian language courses and promoting tolerance (with sometimes questionable means).

Puntulis was once the singer of the “Perkons” rock band and became a singer at the Latvian National Opera in the 90's. From 1995 to 2000 he was the head of the singing department of the Latvian Academy of Music (LMA). The politician received his MA degree in singing and teaching from LMA.
