Elves versus trolls in battle for Latvian internet

Take note – story published 7 years ago

An army of elfish warriors is being assembled in Latvia to fight the trollish forces of darkness and discord, reports LSM's Latvian service

The 'elves' in this case are volunteers dedicated to exposing and countering the activities of internet trolls spreading lies, disinformation and other forms of online offensiveness in Latvia's media space.

The gathering of the elvish clans is the brainchild of former diplomat Ingmārs Bisenieks and is similar to an initiative already set up in Lithuania.

The idea is supported by the Center for East European Policy Studies (CEEPS) and the Latvian Transatlantic Organization (LATO).

While Latvia's physical defense and security apparatus is being strengthened with new equipment, training and assistance from allies, foreign trolls are still free to roam at will around Latvian cyberspace, CEEPS and LATO said in a statement backing the "elf unit".

"It is time for those Latvians to unite who are not indifferent to what is happening in Latvia's Internet. Therefore, CEEPS and LATO offer support and encourage the initiative," the statement said.

It is hoped the internet elves will develop a platform where they will be able to exchange views and experiences in the fight against internet trolls, plan and implement countermeasures, as well as gain knowledge about the most effective means of fighting against misinformation and propaganda.

Anyone interested in lending an elfing hand is invited to email [email protected] or look up the Facebook group 'Elfu vienība'.
