The Estonian fire service has sent a special tracked vehicle and crew to help their Latvian colleagues tackle a major fire raging in bogland near the Latvia-Estonia border and Lithuania will send a helicopter to work alongside the helicopter of the Latvian armed forces, LTV reported August 2.

According to State Forestry Service official Zigmunds Jaunķiķis, an area of around 220 hectares is affected, the fire having grown from an initial estimate of 30 hectares.

Latvia's state Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) also posted dramatic aerial pictures of smoke clouds billowing over the countryside in Ramata parish at the scene of the fire. Thursday morning the VUGD said around 80 firefighters were at the scene of the blaze.

Another hot day is forecast Thursday, meaning fire crews will again have their work cut out to contain the flames, though there are hopes that relatively high humidity may help stifle the flames. While the remote location makes access difficult, it also means there are no properties immediately threatened by the fire.
