Face veil ban constitutional, says court

Face veils characteristic to those Muslims wear could be banned for the benefit of public safety, and the ban would be in compliance with the Latvian Constitution, Constitutional Court chairman Aldis Laviņš told Latvian Television on Tuesday.

He said that in the current geopolitical situation politicians should be ready to react to new challenges, one of which is integrating people from other cultures within our society.

Laviņš stressed that "a balance must be found" in the matter. He said that human rights can be limited to a degree for the safety of the rest of the society.

The Justice Ministry is pushing through an initiative on banning face covering clothes. The initiative is related to increasing asylum seeker numbers, however it would in effect ban people from wearing other clothing like ski masks as well.

It seems that exceptions will take up more print than the actual ban, which would have to exclude doctors, welders and other professions.

Estonia has been pondering a similar ban since last summer.
