First grass fire registered in Latvia

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Tuesday the first last year's grass fire was registered in Ķekava parish where grass burned in an area of 20 square meters, reported LSM's Latvian-language service.

Fires like these are common in Latvia as people ignore official warnings and burn off last year's grass in the fields, risking life and limb in the process.

The fire in question was put out before the Fire and Rescue Service arrived, according to an announcement by the service.

The first grass fire is often registered well before the 'season' starts around April. For example, Liepāja saw the first 2015 grass fire on January 4.
